Location Spotlight: Naumburg

Welcome back!  This week's location spotlight is on Naumburg, in the German state of Sachsen-Anhalt.  Naumburg was properly founded in 1029, as a state of the Holy Roman Empire (its name loosely translating as "new city").  The city is notable for having two large sections, the former "people's city" and "church city," which encompass the areas which were predominantly citizens' housing and church controlled propertyies.
Originally functioning as a trading city, it lost importance due to the city of Leipzig's rise in prominence, and due to the 30 Years' War.  During the time of the former GDR, Naumburg served as an                                                                                     important manufacturing center.

Photo-op central.

The Marientor is a former section of the city wall, which is nowadays opened for tours.  It is the only remaining original city gate, which in its time has also operated as a prison.  It is one of the first sights you will come across in the city if you arrive by train.

Ignore the construction!

The city museum is just off of the main market place in the center of the city.  Fun fact, the building is the oldest secular building in the entire city.

Say hello to St. Wenzel's Church!  Basically, given that every city has the one tall thing that you are supposed to climb, here it is!  There is a door on the side of the church that you see here (its on the other side of the small building you see in front of it).  It costs 1-2 Euros to go up (pay at the top), and gives you a panorama view of the city.  Pack your walking shoes!

And finally, here is the Cathedral of St. Peter and St. Paul.  It is open to tour, and still contains much of its original architecture and statues inside and out.  It is also home to an exhibition of stained glass works, which are definitely worth checking out (they are scattered throughout the complex!).

For your Amusement:

How to control a clock tower.
I was getting worried that there wouldn't be a strange
man wearing nothing but a gold toga.
There was so much stained glass in this place.
I'm also not allowed to take pictures in here either.
Just what every building needs, a little golden lady!
I can totally do the artsy thing!
The city Rathaus.  Colorful doors all around!
Just a normal house.
Two bells are better than one!
Sunny for a change!
There are deer antlers on the wall over there.
There's also a German couple laughing at the tourists.
The Germans do love their parks!
Check out that water!
I'm not sure what this statue is, but it appears to be some
angels of death nonsense.
If there isn't an elephant somewhere...
Someone's been drankin' here!
Some sort of artsy building.
WWII Holocaust Memorial.
Get your round rooms here!
Flower box? Spire?  What a house!
Checkmate!
Proverb of the Day:

When you wear fluorescent colors around small insects buzzing around flowers,
they might decide that you are way more fun to hang around.
