Tips and Tricks: Volume 2 - School and Home Supply Shopping

Remember when it was this simple?

It's Sunday again, and that means that its time more another round of tips!  In this week's post, I'll explain some of the best places to pick up some cheap school and household supplies (here's to hoping that you didn't use up valuable space in your suitcase for them!), because wouldn't you know, all of those American chains which we are used to don't exist here in Germany (including all of the various [name]-Marts!).

They're only ripping up the street guys, its fine.

First up on deck is "Woolworth."  While the original American company has since closed up shop (and became "Foot Locker"), the German section of the company is still going strong as Woolworth GmbH.  Anyway, it has a wide variety of products, ranging from home supplies like cookware and decorations, to paper products, to clothing and suitcases.  This is located directly next door to the "Neues Rathaus," or New City Hall here in Leipzig
(although they do have other branches in other cities around Germany); look for Petersstrasse 50 on a map.

I think they're allergic to large business signs.

Second, there is "Pfennigpfeiffer," one of several such discount stores, which has school supplies, household decorations, kitchen and bathroom supplies, and other odds and ends.  This particular one can be found on Kupfergasse, which is approximately 50 feet away from the University of Leipzig's Augustusplatz campus' New Seminar Building.  There are multiple locations all over Leipzig and the rest of Germany.  If you need something quick for class, this is the place to go!

It's inside than it looks!

"Mäc Geiz" is a discount store along the same lines as Pfennigpfeiffer, with school supplies, household items, decorations, and also some cooking supplies like spices.  They have locations all around Leipzig, and Germany in general, with varying sized stores.  This particular one is located on Nikolaistrasse here in Leipzig, but it is not uncommon to see one in shopping centers or pedestrianized areas in other cities as well.

This looks familiar!

Back for a second round is "Allerlei," a shop here in Leipzig, which specializes in products from the former German Democratic Republic (East Germany, as we typically refer to it in the United States).  They sell mostly household goods like cooking utensils, but also have some craft supplies and gift items as well.  Like the Mäc Geiz shown above, Allerlei is also found on Nikolaistrasse; however, there aren't any others beyond the one shown on the left.  If you are looking for home supply items that can handle a university student's "gentle" touch, but are still relatively inexpensive, this is the place to go!

See you next time, and good luck finding everything!

For your Amusement:

Should I pick one up on my way home?
I don't think you know how a smile works...

Can anyone explain why there is a crystal shop in
every German city?
